Do you get lower back pain from or while driving?

In the clinic we see people who present with back pain that either flares up when driving, or that becomes a problem while they are driving or immediately after.

Back pain from driving can occur from poor posture, sustained postures, restricted movement ranges, and decreased variety of movements.

The correct driving position to prevent back pain is the one your body can tolerate without becoming irritated.

πŸ’‘ Below are some tips to help you avoid back pain while driving:

βœ… Adjust your headrest – you should be able to rest the back of your head on the headrest without it pushing your head forward.

βœ… Adjust your seat – the seat should be positioned so that your knees are not against the dashboard, but that you don’t have to sit with your arms stretching forward to reach the steering wheel. The backrest angle should be adjusted to comfort.

βœ… Use a lumbar support – ask your physiotherapist about these. Alternatively, fold a towel and place it under your hips, behind your lower back or behind your shoulders.

βœ… Take regular breaks – the recommendation is to get out of your car and move your body every 2 hours. This helps prevent both physical and mental fatigue.
